Gabriela Lorraine, Breathing Fashion

Hello dear readers,
I hope you’re all having a lovely day filled with laughter and the perfect summer breeze. I’m Gabriela Lorraine, of Breathing Fashion, and I will be a sophomore fashion merchandising major and print journalism minor come fall! I love the macabre, yoga, John Steinbeck, well dressed men, holding hands, lipstick and bow ties.  I imagine too much and breathe too little, and I think about my future in fashion a little more than I probably should.  I’m an aspiring fashion journalist with boney shoulders, an Alice Dellal inspired sidecut and some incredible memories that have been created at USC.
Although I think it’s important to have your own personal style and aesthetic, I still think it’s worth it to pay attention to trends and adopt whatever you like. I couldn’t be understated or simple if I tried; I’m a more is more kind of person in practically every facet of my life. I love bold silhouettes in dark colors, spikes, studs, leather and oversized purses. Some of my favorite trends are innerwear as outerwear and cut outs. I love using Polyvore to create my dream outfits; here are some of my favorites.

I’ve described my style as “Macabre Meets Steinbeck” since I love mixing black and floral. I’ve also coined “High Fashion New York Death Queen Cool” as my personal style.
As I said earlier, I make floral crowns on my Etsy, El Bambino.  I’m constantly in awe of my surroundings, and I draw a lot of inspiration from other realms. Who’s to say we’re the only ones?
These are all the crowns that are currently listed!

If you check back Sunday I’ll have 6 or 7 new crowns up.

Gabriela Lorraine

Alana Fuscardo, Badgley Mischka

Hello everyone!

My name is Alana Fuscardo and I am the Vice President of Public Relations for Fashion Board. I will be a junior this upcoming year and I cannot wait to get started on more projects for this organization!

I am spending my summer in New York City as a sales intern in the Badgley Mischka showroom. This opportunity is once in a lifetime and I am so lucky to be doing what I love and to have the chance to start so young!

Sunday I moved into University Hall, the NYU dorm I am living in this summer. I am right in the heart of Union Square. Below is my view from the 13th floor! Monday morning I was lucky enough to meet a fun group of girls in my program for lunch and we mapped out our way to work. We got over our fear of the subway and took the Q to 42nd Street.

Tuesday was the big day! I could barely sleep Monday night knowing I was starting the next morning. I wore the outfit below. A blush colored, ruffled collar and sleeved top with cropped black pants and spiked flats. I began my day with a subway ride with 3 other girls and we were so early that we sat at a coffee shop before work began. Then at 10 I went into my building where the doorman (what!?) called the elevator for me and I took it to the 22nd floor. The elevator doors opened to a beautiful lobby with mirrored tables and frosted glass walls. I got a tour of the floor and the entire office staff was insanely friendly! My first day consisted of meeting everyone, finding all of the samples in the closet that were sold out and taking them to the archive closet, filing paperwork from buyers, and gathering photos of their latest collection for Neiman Marcus's Conclave where Badgley Mischka is the featured designer this year! While doing this, both Mark and James (the designers of the brand) came into the room and I was completely star struck! I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to talk to them both for a few minutes! They were so sweet!
What a great way to spend my first day!

These are my favorite pieces from their Fall 2013 collection. I was lucky enough to work with them in the showroom! Jana Kramer (country singer and former One Tree Hill star) wore the dress to the American Country Music Awards show this year.

This is an inside look of the waiting area and part of the showroom at Badgley Mischka. On Wednesday, my second day, I took the photos I collected the day before and helped select which looks would be used in the Conclave fashion show, what trends should be featured and what order they would go in. I also learned how to use the brand's computer program Apparel Magic. We use this to look up each and every dress, gown, shirt or skirt within the company.

The outfit below is what I wore on Thursday: a high waisted maxi and cropped halter top with a sock bun. It was an exciting day at work, we had our go-to model Gigi (she was incredibly nice) come in for a fitting for their upcoming line. I assisted her in changing out of about 20 dresses as the designers and a few other key players in the company tweaked and tailored each cocktail dress or gown. Two other interns and I then took that new collection and printed stickers that had various information about the dress on them and applied them to the Badgley Mischka tags and used a tag gun to attach each one to the dress.

View from the Empire State Building. Hello, NYC!

Today (Friday) was a shorter day. I wore a charcoal maxi dress and layered a few new chain necklaces. I started the day by tagging a few more new dresses. After that, another intern and I sewed labels on to about 15 new collection dresses. (shocking isn't it? me sewing? I finally learned, and have a few needle pricks on my hand to prove it!) We then went to pick up books that included all of the looks that would be used in the Neiman Marcus fashion show and mailed them out. We did a few more small tasks before we left for the day. The company has "summer fridays" so we get to leave early, how exciting!

Keep checking the blog for more stories. The members of Fashion Board are doing big things and they can only get bigger!

Jessica Kiraly, Krupp Group

Hey lovely ladies (and gents in case any of ya’ll are reading this),
My name is Jessica Kiraly. I am the secretary of Fashion Board at USC and an upcoming junior. This summer I am living in the city of all cities, New York. I am interning for the PR firm Krupp Group. I am one of two interns in their jewelry department. My first week has FLOWN by and I have really enjoyed it.
I have a 10-15 walk from where I’m staying to the office so I got pretty lucky, and I get to walk through what is known as the flower district or what Brittany, our president, called the jungle the other day.
Working at Krupp has been great so far and I have already learned a ton. My day to day activities include pulling pieces from our client’s collections requested by magazines or stylists and then sending them over to them. I also monitor magazines, newspapers, websites, and social media to see if any of our clients pop up. Every day I gradually get more things added to my list of duties so it has been really fast paced and keeps me on my toes.
I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. Make sure to check back later for even more updates!

Billboard Music Awards 2013

This past Sunday was the annual Billboard Music Awards and as always the red (or in this case blue) carpet did not disappoint. Unfortunately for this award show the fashion fails outweighed the fabulous ones and at the top of my list for best dressed was Ms. Selena Gomez.

Selena Gomez looked absolutely stunning in this Atelier Versace dress from the Spring 2013 Couture collection. I fell in love with this dress when the collection came out and I’m so happy that she wore it to this event. It’s fun, flirty, but still so chic and Selena actually wore it better than the model.

Second on my best-dressed list is the always fierce Miley Cyrus. This beautiful Balmain creation is from the Spring 2013 Ready-to-wear collection. I saw this look and was automatically mesmerized! It’s so chic and it is definitely of the man repelling variety, as there are plenty of guys who do not understand this shimmery black and white embroidered number but Miley works it like a fashion queen!

As much as it pains me to say this– Taylor Swift was also on my best-dressed list. This cobalt blue mini dress is young, fresh, and chic with its texture and subtle sheer cut outs. Taylor Swift is like that itch on my back I just can’t scratch and if only she could hire someone to help her relationships like she does for her awesome red carpet style.

Emmy Rossum really hit the nail on the head with this look. It is a dress by Zuhair Murad and I’m completely in love with it. The sheer paneling covered with polka dots, the peep hole in the front, and of course the color. She looks elegant but still young and fun. This look was a definite success.

And lastly on my best dressed is Selena Gomez…again! I’m a sucker for a black gown and this one with its sheer cut outs is just so perfect. She is also wearing a Zuhair Murad dress from his Spring 2013 collection, which is causing a bit of a stir, as it is almost identical to a dress Prabal Gurung designed fall of last year. Regardless of the “inspiration” behind the dress it is sleek and beautiful.

And on the note of Selena Gomez– I have to give a shout out to her questionable love interest Justin Bieber for his seriously disgracing the fashion gods for this little ensemble.  One sleeve? What would be the purpose of only having one sleeve? There is no functional aspect to this single sleeved jacket and Justin Bieber belongs in the tool box with the rest of the screwdrivers and hammers. I won’t even address the leather harem pants that have become Justin’s staple piece of clothing.

A Letter From the Pres

Hi everyone!

My name is Brittany and I am the President of Fashion Board at USC.  I am currently studying fashion merchandising and will be a junior, come fall.  This summer I am interning with fashion designer Hunter Bell of Hunter Dixon.  Many of you may recognize her as the recent winner of this seasons' Fashion Star!

I have now been in New York City for two weeks and can successfully say I have survived the first three days of my internship.  Working for Hunter Dixon has been an amazing experience thus far.  Even though I have only been interning a few short days, I am starting to learn my way around.

The first day I arrived at the office I was immediately put to work.  Luckily for me running around the city wasn't too much of an issue because the office is located right in the center of the garment district!  The only downside has been running back and forth to the same places multiple times during the same hour.  With all the running around this internship provides I may be in the greatest shape of my life once the summer ends.  Look out Columbia!

Besides running around, my day mainly consists of assisting Hunter herself and the design assistant Britta.  I help them in the office or running errands for the production team.  If there is anything to take away from this half of a week, it is to ALWAYS have comfortable shoes and to be sure you always have your charger.  I do not know what I would do without the HotSpot app and Google maps on my phone!

I look forward to the rest of the summer and I will be sure to keep everyone posted.  I cannot wait to hear about everyone's summer adventures!

XOXO,

Brittany

Hi everyone!

We are a student organization called Fashion Board at University of South Carolina.

This blog is devoted to all things fashion! We will be posting on our favorite looks from students on campus, telling you about the daily lives of our members during their fashion internships in NYC, letting you in on the latest Fashion Board events, and updating you on what's going on in the fashion world around the globe.
